FAQ

What is the Air National Guard?

The Air National Guard (ANG) is a reserve component of the U.S. Air Force with dual-state and federal missions. It serves the state during emergencies (governor-activated), and can be called to federal duty by the President or Congress during war or national emergencies.

How much time do I need to commit?

You’re generally required to participate one weekend a month and about 15 days per year (annual training). After basic training and technical school, that’s the ongoing minimum time commitment.

Can ANG help me pay for college?

Yes. ANG members are typically eligible for education benefits like the Montgomery GI Bill, tuition assistance (state/local), Community College of the Air Force credits, and sometimes additional incentive “kicker” programs.  Check with your local recruiter for eligibility.

What are the basic requirements to join?

You will need to meet age, education, medical & background standards. For example: 18-42 years old, high school diploma (or equivalent), pass ASVAB test, pass physical, with (usually) no major legal issues. Requirements may vary by prior service or specific roles.

What benefits do ANG members receive?

Some common benefits: affordable health and dental insurance, retirement options, eligibility for VA home loans, low-cost life insurance, tuition assistance, plus full-time benefits in some cases.
